Spin legend Shane Warne says Australia will have a massive fight on their hands against England later this year but believes the tourists have the ability to spring an Ashes surprise.
Australia’s poor showing in the recent series loss in India has many convinced England will romp to Ashes victory on home soil later this year.
But Warne, Australia’s leading Test wicket taker, says the visitors have plenty in their arsenal to get the better of the old enemy.
“The good thing with the conditions in England is that the ball always seams around,” Warne told Channel Nine.
“Our fast bowling attack is good so we could knock over their top order.”
While the likes of Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson, Patrick Cummins and Peter Siddle have the ability to torment Alastair Cook’s men, Warne said Australia’s concerns lie with the willow.
“Our struggles will be our runs,” Warne said.
“If Michael Clarke, who is playing beautifully, doesn’t get runs, we could struggle. We need David Warner to perform and Shane Watson, we need a bit more from him.
“If Watson fires, David Warner supports and Clarke continues his form, we’re a chance.
“If they don’t we’ll be in a bit of trouble.”
