The senior player Jaques Kallis and injured JP Duminy are believed to be included in the ODI squad for the Champions Trophy 2013, which will be announced on Thursday.
Jaques Kallis does not take part in any bilateral series now, as part of the management’s plan to rest him as much as possible in order to ensure he is fit for as many Test matches as possible. Although he has expressed his desire not to take part in the 2015 World Cup, he has agreed to return to the ODI squad for the Champions Trophy. Kallis has not been away from the shorter format though, as he is currently participating in the 6th edition of the IPL in India.
JP Duminy is also supposed to be included in the ODI Squad, after an Achilles’ tendon injury which has kept him out of the game since November 2012. He ruptured his Achilles’ tendon on the first day of the first Test against Australia. He is on his way to complete recovery after he was seen batting and bowling a week ago. South Africa’s team manager and medical doctor said, “We are exercising extreme caution because of the sensitive nature of the injury but we remain cautiously optimistic of his (Duminy’s) speedy return to action.” Duminy has not played competitive cricket since September and is hoping to recover fully before the start of the Champions Trophy. He also couldn’t play for his IPL Team, the newly instated Sunrisers Hyderabad, due to his injury.
Another injured player, Faf Du Plessis, is due to return to the squad after he caught a lower back niggle during Pakistan’s tour of South Africa in March. He missed the last 2 matches of the series due to ongoing back troubles and was consequently not able to bat or bowl. He underwent a six week rehabilitation program and just last week, left for India to join his IPL team, the Chennai Super Kings. He has fully recovered, which is good news since he has been an important member of the South African Squad.
South Africa announced a 30 man preliminary squad which consisted of many players coming through the roots of domestic cricket.
