Apr 24, Colombo: China today expressed its interest to boost two-way trade with Sri Lanka and to promote investments in the country.
Vice Minister of China’s Ministry of Commerce Chen Jian told Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa that China is interested in enhancing bilateral trade between the two countries when he, along with a delegation of high ranking Chinese officials, called on the President at Temple Trees Wednesday.
During the discussion, the Chinese officials informed President Rajapaksa that Sri Lankan products are becoming more popular in China and that they hope more Sri Lankan products will be introduced to the Chinese market in the future.
The Vice Minister also said that in addition to collaborating on large-scale projects, China would also like to invest in small and medium-scale projects.
The Chinese delegation included a number of high-ranking officials from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce who are in Sri Lanka to take part in the joint economic and trade commission during which the delegations of the two countries will discuss plans for the next three to five years.
The Deputy Minister of Finance and the Minister of International Monetary Cooperation Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Secretary to the Treasury Dr. P.B. Jayasundera, President’s Chief-of-Staff Mr. Gamini Senarath, Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce Mr. Anura Siriwardena and Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in China Mr. Ranjith Uyangoda were also present.
