Even a change of dressing room couldn’t inspire Pune Warriors to victory as they succumbed by 17 runs to Royal Challengers Bangalore, who managed their first away win of Indian Premier League 2013.
Half-centuries from Saurabh Tiwary and AB de Villiers helped Bangalore post 187 for three and although Robin Uthappa replied with 75 in 45 balls, Pune only managed to close on 170 for nine.
Tiwary, opening the batting with Chris Gayle, made 52 in 45 balls, making up for a relatively slow start to Bangalore’s innings – Gayle himself scoring 21 in as many deliveries.
Virat Kohli made 25 in 18 balls and after Tiwary had hit two fours and two sixes, de Villiers thumped 50 not out in 23 balls, with six fours and two sixes with Moises Henriques weighing in with an unbeaten 27 in 13.
Ashok Dinda took a brace of wickets for Pune but at a cost of 52 runs while Tirumalasetti Suman was the other wicket-taker.
Pune made a good start – quicker even, than Bangalore had managed – before Aaron Finch fell for 15, Suman for 11 and Yuvraj Singh for 16.
Uthappa, meanwhile, stood firm at the other end, blasting five fours and five sixes against one of his former teams, and almost single-handedly keeping his side in the game.
Bangalore kept chipping away with wickets – three for Ranganath Vinay Kumar and two for Murali Kartik – and although Angelo Mathews hit 32 in 19 balls, Pune were always looking second favourites.
Uthappa’s dismissal in the 18th over was final confirmation that Bangalore would indeed break their run of failing to win away from the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, and just as he had after smashing Pune for 175 when the teams last met, Gayle took a wicket in the final over of the match, dismissing Ajantha Mendis for two.
RP Singh and Henriques took one wicket apiece.
