Chennai Super Kings strengnthened their hold on the top spot with a big victory over a lack lusture Pune Warriors side by beting them by 37 runs in match 42 of IPL 2013.
Match-Report : Pune Warriors India vs Chennai Super Kings ,at Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium , Pune , April 30 2013.
M.S. Dhoni won the toss on grassy Pune wicket which has kept low in the past and chose to bat . Pune and Chennai each made one change with Suman coming in for Mithun Manas for the home team and Nannes making way for Albie Morkel.
The ball was seaming and bouncing on this grassy wicket and Chennai lost Michael Hussey early to a good delivery from Kane Richardson which was angled in and just straightened a bit to beat Hussey and rattled into his stumps. His opening partner Wriddhaman Saha should have been back in the hut after just playing two balls as Bhuvaneshwar Kumar’s first ball hit him right in front and that looked out but the umpire did not raise the dreaded finger and Saha survived , he looked more shocked that he wasn’t sent back . He fell later on to Rahul Sharma attempting a sweep shot but was struck in front and was adjudged LBW. At 28 for 2 out came crisis man Badrinath and he along with Raina steadied the shipon 75 of 59 balls for the third wicket.
Chennai were 55 for 2 after 10 overs and with 8 wickets in the bag they exploded to take 109 runs on the next 10 with Suresh Raina and Badrinath starting the on-slaught and M.S. Dhoni finishing it off with a blistering 45 of 16 balls which pushed Chennai above the 160 mark , and a total of 160 would have always been a tough ask on this deck which was doing a bit.
Pune started well getting 21 of the first two overs but then fell apart like a pack of cards until some late lower order hitting from Kumar and Richardson which pushed them past the 120 run mark . Finch chased a ball moving away from him and nicked it to Dhoni who made no mistake ,of the bowling of Mohit Sharma who trapped Suman right in front the very next ball .Robin Uthappa was found short of his ground attempting a suicidal run and was run out by Raina which left them at 29 for 3 and they never really recoverd from that situation . Yuvraj also departed early chasing a ball outside off-stump with no footwork and gave Dhoni an easy chance which he gleefully accepted . Wright and Nayar were also run out in quick succession . Steven Smith provided some resistence stringing together a 31 run partnership with Kane Richardson for the 7th wicket but Smith departed when the score was 92 . Richardson and Sharma both followed soon and Pune were on the verge of bieng bowled out within the alloted 20 overs .
This win consolidates Chennai’s positin at the top while this loss will further dent the confidence of Pune which is languishing at the bottom of the table along with the Daredevils . The Super Kings next face Kings XI on Thursday in Chennai while Pune take on Bangalore on the same day at home .
Scorecard :Chennai Super Kings 164 for 3 (Raina 63*, Dhoni 45*,Wright 1-12) beat Pune Warriors 127 for 9 (Steven Smith 35, Mohit Sharma 3-21) by 37 runs.
