Leading England batsman Kevin Pietersen will not feature in any of their matches against New Zealand and will bypass the Champions Trophy as he struggles to overcome a knee injury.

The 32-year-old was earlier this month ruled out of the two May Tests against the Black Caps and on Wednesday the England and Wales Cricket Board said he will miss the one-day series starting on May 31 as well.

It says an MRI scan on the injury, which forced Pietersen to miss the third Test in New Zealand, revealed only “some improvement” to bruising in the bone.

Pietersen will miss the Champions Trophy and there are fears over his fitness for the start of the Ashes series, which begins at Trent Bridge on July 10.
