Lyon, on Wednesday named as Australia's only spinner for the Ashes, will return to the state where he grew up despite the fact it was the Redbacks who gave the off spinner his breakthrough in first-class cricket, plucking him from the Adelaide Oval ground staff.
His departure opened the door for SA to snare prodigious leg spinner Adam Zampa from NSW.
The talented 21-year-old, described as a clone of Shane Warne, could find himself a regular starter across all three formats for the Redbacks.
McDonald, 31, requested a release from his Cricket Victoria contract to allow him to move to Adelaide to play under former Victorian team-mate and current SA coach Darren Berry.
McDonald has played 71 first-class matches for the Bushrangers and four Test matches for Australia, taking nine wickets and averaging 21.40 with the bat.
He boasts an outstanding first-class record having taken 163 wickets for Victoria at 28.18 and has made 3516 runs at 40.88, including eight centuries and 19 half-centuries.
Also on the move is veteran all-rounder Dan Christian who was released from his SA contract before being snapped up by the Vics.
Berry has also de-listed former Test spinner Cullen Bailey along with Jake Haberfield and James Smith.
Clive Rose, a left-arm spinner who made his first-class debut for Victoria in February, has joined Tasmania on a one-year deal.
Rose,23, has been starved of opportunities with the Vics and his progress would have been slowed further at the Bushrangers with the emergence of migrant leg spinner Fawad Ahmed and the return of Jon Holland from injury.
To make way for Rose, the Tigers have released another former Test tweaker Jason Krejza.
Meanwhile retired Test batsman Michael Hussey is in two minds over whether to play on for Western Australia next summer.
Hussey was not part of the list of contracted players the Warriors announced on Wednesday due to the uncertainty over his future.
But coach Justin Langer said the state would give Hussey as much time as he needed to plan his future.
