New Zealand cricket captain Brendon McCullum and senior batsman Ross Taylor have been released early from their respective Indian Premier League teams and will join the national side on their tour of England over the next couple of days.
McCullum will join the team in Derby tonight (NZT) and Taylor is expected to arrive at the weekend. New Zealand play the first of two warmup matches, against Derbyshire, starting tomorrow night (NZT). The first test starts on May 16.
Coach Mike Hesson yesterday said he hoped to have the two senior players on deck by next Tuesday or Wednesday – both will play the second warmup match, against England A – but the Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors agreed to the early release of McCullum and Taylor, respectively.
McCullum has only played in one of Kolkata’s 10 matches while Taylor has not featured for last-placed Pune since being dropped after playing their first five games.
