Middlesex got their LV= County Championship season off to a successful start with a 10-wicket win over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Set a victory target of just 108, the visitors romped to victory in just 25 overs as openers Sam Robson and Chris Rogers each compiled their second half-centuries of the match.

With rain forecast for later in the day, the onus was on the visitors to swiftly wrap up the Nottinghamshire second innings and they could not have done so any quicker.

Andre Adams, unbeaten overnight on 50, tried to run Toby Roland-Jones’ first delivery of the day down to third man but a faint edge was spectacularly taken at second slip by a diving Ollie Rayner.

Robson and Rogers, who put on 106 together in the Middlesex first innings, both survived early scares as tempers became frayed.

Notts clearly believed that Robson had edged Luke Fletcher to wicketkeeper Chris Read but umpire Neil Mallender was unconvinced.

Words were exchanged between the fielders and the young opener, and Read threw the ball towards the stumps after taking each of the next two deliveries.

The officials intervened, requesting order to be restored but it heated up again in the next over when Rogers survived a claim for another catch behind, off Ajmal Shahzad.

A succession of boundaries from both batsmen dampened the spirits of the home side. Rogers, in particular, was ruthless to anything on his legs, whipping Shahzad and Adams away through midwicket.

Rogers was the first to his fifty, from just 52 deliveries, while Robson reached the landmark off 84 balls before stroking Samit Patel through the off side for the winning runs.
