Teenage wicketkeeper Cameron Herring could be a surprise inclusion in the Gloucestershire side to take on Essex in the opening game of the LV=County Championship Second Division, starting at Chelmsford tomorrow.

A first-year scholar, who only joined the club’s Academy last summer, the 18-year-old Tredegar-born gloveman has put himself in contention to make his first-class debut.

Herring featured in Gloucestershire’s final warm-up match against MCC Young Cricketers at High Wycombe on Sunday and Monday, while fellow keepers Richard Coughtrie and Gareth Roderick were despatched to The Oval to play in a three-day second XI fixture against Surrey.

Gloucestershire captain Michael Klinger and director of cricket John Bracewell will check on the fitness of all-rounder Will Gidman (thigh) before finalising their 13-man squad.
