Apr 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Education has decided to appoint a Deputy Director General each for the nine provinces, government sources say.
The Deputy Director General appointed in addition to the Provincial Director is assigned to monitor the upgrading of schools under the “Thousand Secondary Schools Development Programme”, which aims to improve the education as a whole and promote science and math education.
The Ministry has prepared a cabinet paper to appoint the Deputy Director Generals.
The development of 400 some schools has already been started island wide under this programme. The rest will be started this year.
The programme to develop 1,000 selected secondary schools commenced in 2012 with the objective of solving the educational problems and shortcomings in disadvantaged rural schools.
Although the programme mainly focuses on secondary schools, a number of primary schools will also be developed to link 3-5 primary schools with one secondary school.
The Treasury has allocated Rs. 8.6 billion for the programme that will be implemented from 2012 to 2016.
