Apr 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka police will deploy over 5,000 police officers to provide security for May Day rallies this year, a senior police official said.
Meanwhile, due to the numerous May Day rallies scheduled in the nation's capital Colombo, the Police urged the public to refrain from entering the city on May 01 except for essential needs.
Senior DIG Anura Senanayake said that about 13 May Day rallies are planned to be held in the city and its suburbs and special security measures will be launched on the day.
The ruling United People Freedom Alliance (UPFA) will hold its May Day rally at the Campbell Park, Borella under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The SLFP and UPFA May Day parade will begin from the Nelum Pokuna Avenue at 12 noon on May 01 and proceeds to Campbell Park. Parties of the UPFA, trade unions, youth and women's wings affiliated to the SLFP will participate in the parade.
Government ally, National Freedom Front (NFF) has decided to commemorate the May Day separately and its rally will be held on May 01 at 3 p.m. at Maligawatte P.D. Sirisena grounds. The demonstration starts from Dematagoda and will proceed to Maligawatte.
Meanwhile, the main opposition United National Party (UNP) will hold three rallies for May Day this year. The main rally is scheduled to be held in Pita Kotte on the morning of May 1st.
The Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) will hold its rally at S.S.Jayasinghe grounds while Frontline Social Party will hold its rally at the Ratnam sports ground at Kotahena.
