* Sri Lanka to complete demarcation of local government boundaries before electionMon, Apr 29, 2013, 01:29 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 29, Colombo: The National Committee appointed to demarcate the wards of local government bodies will hand over its final report to the government after completing discussions with District Secretaries.

The committee has already completed discussions with ten district secretaries and will hold discussions with the district secretaries of Batticaloa and Trincomalee today.

The government has appointed 25 district committees to demarcate the borders of electoral areas of the local government councils of the districts.

Chairman of the committee Jayalath Ravi Dissanayake said the committee expects to finalize the discussions by the beginning of next month. After that opinions and suggestions will be obtained from the public representatives before handing over the final report.

The committee expects to complete the demarcation process before the election for local government bodies held.

The newly demarcated electorates will be used at the next local government election which is to be held as a mix of the first-past-the-post and the proportional systems.

The national committee of demarcation of electoral boundaries chaired by Jayalath Ravi Dissanayaka comprises five senior public officials. P.H.G. Premasiri, Wimal Subasinghe, P.M. Nahiya and S. Athavan are the other members of the committee.
