Neil Wagner has been added to the Black Caps squad for the opening Test against England, starting Wednesday in Dunedin.

The 26-year-old fast bowler was a strong performer for the New Zealand XI against England at Queenstown this week, taking four wickets in England’s first innings.

Black Caps head coach Mike Hesson used the Queenstown match as a trial for the final fast-bowling spot in the 13-strong squad, with Wagner heading off Mark Gillespie and bolter Jimmy Neesham.

Wagner made his Test debut for New Zealand against West Indies last July and last appeared in his homeland of South Africa in January. He has five Test wickets, with a best 2-24 on debut.

New Zealand: Brendon McCullum (capt), Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Dean Brownlie, Peter Fulton, Tom Latham, Bruce Martin, Hamish Rutherford, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson
