Apr 30, Colombo: Sri Lanka's former Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has proposed to remove air conditioning in the offices of the public officials to reduce the increased electricity bill.
The Minister said that during his tenure as the Minister of Power and Energy, when a cold wave hit the island, the power consumption dropped suddenly by around 33%. He said that a study revealed that the reason for the drop was shutting down air conditioning.
The Minister pointed out that 40% of the country's electricity bill goes for air conditioning. He said that the electricity tariff could be reduced by half if air conditioning was shut down.
According to Ranawaka, the Ceylon Electricity Board incurs losses due to the pressure to maintain this need.
