After failing to qualify in the last installment, United Arab Emirates will debut at this year’s ICC World Twenty20 alongside 16 other teams. The boys from Emirates, drawn in Group-B, have to top the table to ensure a spot in the Top ten.
UAE were the fourth team to qualify for this tournament. A narrow victory by 10 runs helped UAE to secure a place in T20 World Cup to be played in Bangladesh. They scored 117 runs in their qualifier against Netherlands and managed to sack them all at 107 runs.
UAE’s cricket team has a mixture of all the top Asian cricketing nations. Most of their players are of Pakistani, Indian and Sri Lankan origin, which gives the clue that cricket, is just not a game for them. Despite the fact that they belong to countries that play amazing cricket, they’ve not been that successful.
UAE has played 10 matches to qualify for the WT20, won six out of ten to book a place in WorldT20. The team does not boast of a very strong cricketing side or experience. Although they’ve a few good victories against their worthy opponents, but the weaknesses can still be seen. Their highest score in a T20 match is 159/8, which they scored against Canada and won by 36 runs. Their lowest total is 85 runs, which they scored while chasing a small total of 147 runs against Ireland. They have a winning ratio of 0.9.
You cannot really point out strength and weaknesses of this side. They have been very unpredictable. When they failed to score a lot of runs, they have been able to defend the lead and vice versa but that has not been the usual case. They’ve not found consistency and this might be the only thing that will cause them a lot of problems.
The team is quite inexperienced. Most of the players have played just 20 games. Age is also another factor. There are a lot of players in their squad that age more than 33 and a few players age more than 40 as well. So all in all their squad is quite aged and not that experience. They’ve added two U-19 players, which might bring in young blood and a lack of experience with it. To sum up, their squad is aged and inexperienced as compared to the other participating team. Their squad for world cup is: Khurram Khan, Rohit Singh, Amjad Ali, Faizan Asif, Manjula Guruge, Rohan Mustafa, Swapnil Patil, Kamran Shahzad, Vikrant Shetty, Sharif Asadullah, Shaiman Anwar, Shadeep Silva
Players to Watch:
UAE’s best batsman, as per the stats is Khurram Khan. He has played 18 games so far and has an average of 34.58. His highest total is 67*. As a bowler his economy is 6.30. He is also the captain of the team.
Nasir Aziz is their highest wicket taker. He has sent 20 batsmen back to the pavilion and has an economy of almost 7 runs an over.
Rohan Mustafa is another promising bowler in their side. He has picked up 11 wickets and has an economy of 5.87
Frankly speaking, their chances are pretty slim. In this short format anything can happen, but their chances of making it into next round are not that good. They will have to be on top of their game and bowlers will have to lower their economy to stand a chance. The average economy of their bowling squad is approximately 6.0 which, in T20 format is a big problem. They might not be able to make it to the next round of the cup. They might win a game or two, if luck is with them.
Ed Barnard believes England Under-19s have had the perfect preparation for the age-group World Cup, which starts on Friday.
Barnard et al are currently in the familiar surroundings of Dubai, where they face Scotland today in a warm-up, having recently spent time there in a tri-series versus Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.
The tournament hosts are England’s first competitive opponents – in Abu Dhabi on Friday.
“The weeks we had our here before Christmas will, I think, help us have a bit of an edge over a couple of teams,” batsman Barnard told ecb.co.uk.
“It was crucial for us to get used to conditions. It’s a case of getting used to the pitches because, obviously, they are a lot different to the indoor school back home.
“One of the main things we learnt is that it is a little bit low-scoring. We can’t really be aiming for 300-plus scores because I think 220-240 is more competitive out here because of the slower and low pitches.
“Spin obviously plays a key part out here with it being a lot drier and hotter. We have to change our gameplans out here, and we really nailed them down out here previously.
“Having got a few runs out here before, we know we can do it and hopefully we can just do it on a more consistent basis.”
In particular, England are familiar with their first opponents having already seen what is in store.
“It was a good chance to have a look at them; if we had gone in without that, they might have been a surprise package,” added Barnard.
“I think now we have played a few games against them, we are a lot more prepared for the whole World Cup.”
